Emulsion Paint Explained: Interior vs Exterior, Sheen Levels & More

Here at Astral, we are known for making products people can rely on, and nowhere is that clearer than in our paints. When we moved into the category we started with emulsion, and these days the term is almost shorthand for wall paint itself. Walk into any store and you will be hard pressed to pick up a tin that does not say ‘emulsion paint’ somewhere on the label. But what actually separates one tin from the next?

This guide walks you through it: what emulsion paint really is, how the interior and exterior versions differ, what those sheen levels on the tin mean, and where our own range — Elita, Esteema, Styla, Extura and Raga — fits in. We have written it with two readers in mind: the homeowner repainting a single room, and the builder, architect or contractor specifying paint across dozens of units.

What is emulsion paint?

In plain terms, emulsion is a water-based paint. Fine colour pigment and a binder — usually an acrylic or vinyl resin — are carried in water, along with a handful of additives that fine-tune how it performs. As the water evaporates, the binder knits together into a tough, flexible film that still breathes with the wall. That water base is the whole trick: it is why emulsion is low on smell, quick to dry, and easy to clean up with nothing more than a bucket of water.

It helps to know how this differs from the older options. Distemper is cheap, but it does not last and you cannot wash it. Enamel is hard-wearing and glossy, but it is solvent-based and high on odour, so it really belongs on metal and wood rather than walls. For everyday surfaces, inside and out, emulsion paint has quietly become the default — and it is the backbone of our range.

There is a practical payoff either way. If you are a homeowner, you can paint after breakfast and move the furniture back the same evening, with very little smell to put up with. If you are running a site, faster recoat times and water clean-up mean quicker turnarounds and lower overheads.

Interior vs exterior emulsion: what’s the difference?

Interior and exterior emulsions come from the same family, but they are built for very different lives. An interior paint leads a sheltered existence, so it is tuned for a smooth, washable finish that shrugs off scuffs and stains, and it is kept low on odour, which matters in homes with young children or pets. An exterior paint has the harder job: standing up to sun, monsoon rain, heat, humidity and the algae that comes with all of it, so it leans on stronger binders and protective additives.

The rule is refreshingly simple: interior paint indoors, exterior paint outdoors. There is nothing to gain from using an exterior product inside, and interior paint will fade and peel outside before long. Matching the paint to the surface is the single most important call on any job — and for project teams, it is exactly what protects both the finish and the warranty.

Understanding sheen levels

Sheen is simply a measure of how much light the dried film bounces back, and it changes both how a wall looks and how it wears. Lower-sheen finishes are soft and forgiving; they hide little bumps and patches beautifully. Higher-sheen finishes throw back more light, wipe clean more easily and last longer — but they also show up every dent and roller mark, so the wall underneath has to be in good shape.

Where each sheen level works best, mapped to our emulsion range.

A rough guide for the home: matt or soft sheen for bedrooms and ceilings, a mid-sheen for living and dining rooms, and a high sheen or gloss for kitchens, children’s rooms and the trims that get wiped down most. Specifiers have one extra thing to weigh — sheen drives maintenance. A more washable, higher-sheen finish along a busy corridor can mean noticeably fewer repaints over a building’s life.

How to choose the right emulsion

If you’re a homeowner

  • Start with the wall. Inside or outside? That one answer already halves your options.
  • Then pick your sheen — matt for restful bedrooms, mid-sheen for living spaces, high sheen for anything you will be cleaning often.
  • Finally, match the tier to the room: Elita for a space you want to love for years, Styla for a smart, budget-friendly refresh, Extura Plus for a weather-beaten facade, Raga for a boundary wall.

If you’re a builder, architect or contractor

  • Specify by project class and the warranty you need to stand behind, then line the tier up with it.
  • Look at coverage and recoat, not just the price on the tin — better coverage and a faster recoat often work out cheaper once labour is in the sum.
  • Standardise across the project for a consistent finish and simpler buying, and lean on our dealers and technical team for site-specific specs and bulk supply.
