1. Prepare thoroughly. Clean off dust, dirt and algae, scrape back loose paint, and fill every crack you can find.
2. Treat damp first. If the wall holds moisture, waterproof it before you paint — paint is a shield, not a cure.
3. Prime the surface. A suitable exterior primer seals porous masonry and gives the topcoat a sound, even base.
4. Apply two coats in the right weather. Paint when it is dry and mild (above about 10°C), leave the recommended recoat time between coats, and never paint just before rain.
